Research areas · What we study
A direction becomes an active programme only when it has a defined project, the people to carry it out, and the means to sustain it. Each area’s status is stated and kept current.

Capabilities · How we work
A capability is a way of working, not a subject. Capabilities combine: a feasibility study may draw on modelling, prototyping, and evaluation at once.

Systems engineering
01
Investigation directed at a defined practical problem, with an explicit account of method and evidence.
02
Structuring studies so that results can be interpreted, repeated, and challenged.
03
Building working artefacts to test feasibility and expose assumptions early.
04
Independent assessment of systems and technologies against stated criteria.
05
Simulation and modelling to explore systems that are costly or impractical to test directly.
06
Rigorous treatment of data, from collection and quality to inference and its limits.
07
Designing and integrating complex systems with attention to interfaces, constraints, and failure.
How research areas develop
A stated area of interest. Questions are being framed and no programme is claimed.
At least one defined project is under way, with named responsibility and documented methods.
Work has stopped for a stated reason. Records remain available and the area may be resumed.
Related initiative
Ranger is an independent technical qualification program associated with the Cybersecurity & Digital Trust direction. It evaluates experienced security and AI-security practitioners on practical work, through two pathways, STRATA and PARALLAX, and is operated separately from this research site.
The research interest lies in its method: whether evidence-based, verifiable evaluation is a more reliable signal of capability than conventional credentials.
